Wordle Streak Disappeared? What You Can Do

If your Wordle streak vanished, the most likely reason is that your stats were stored only in your browser and that browser data was cleared, switched or blocked. Players who are logged in to an NYT account can see their stats across devices. Signed-out players cannot. This guide shows what we observed, which checks to run and what you cannot count on getting back.
What we tested. On 16 October 2026 we opened the live NYT Wordle in a clean browser profile, won the puzzle without logging in, then looked at what the game stored and what the Statistics screen showed after different actions. We did not test with a logged-in NYT account, so we make no claims about how account recovery works. For anything account-specific, use NYT's own support.
What the game itself tells you
The game's screens say it plainly:
- In the How To Play screen: "Log in or create a free NYT account to link your stats."
- In the Statistics screen when signed out: "Track your stats and view badges. Access your Wordle badges, win percentage and more with a free account."
Notice the wording. Stats are tied to an account that you link. If you never logged in, there is no account for them to follow you to.
Where signed-out stats live
We won a puzzle in a clean profile and looked at the browser's local storage for the Wordle site. Before playing there was no game record. After winning, the site had added an entry named games-state-wordleV2/ANON (the last part, ANON, stands for an anonymous, signed-out player) along with a few other items. That is where a signed-out player's progress lives: in the browser, on that device, under that site's data.
We then tested three situations:
| What we did | What the Statistics screen showed afterwards |
|---|---|
| Cleared the site's local storage and reloaded | The empty signed-out screen: "Track your stats and view badges... Create a free account" |
| Opened Wordle in a brand-new browser profile (similar to a private window or another device) | The same empty screen |
| Just won the puzzle (no other action) | A "Congratulations" screen with a prompt to create an account |
The practical meaning: for a signed-out player, anything that wipes the browser's saved data for that site also wipes the streak, and a different browser or device starts from zero.
Why a streak disappears: causes by symptom
| What happened | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Streak reset after you cleaned your phone or computer | You cleared cookies or site data | Did a cleaning app or browser setting remove "site data"? |
| Streak is gone on a new phone or computer | Signed-out stats do not move between devices | Log in on the old device if you can, then log in on the new one |
| Streak gone in one browser, present in another | Each browser keeps its own data | Open the other browser and check |
| Streak gone only when using a private window | Private windows start empty and discard data when closed | Use a normal window |
| Streak gone after switching between the app and the website | They may keep separate records unless you are logged in | Log in on both |
| Streak gone after you missed a day | A streak counts consecutive days | Check whether a day was skipped |
| Streak shows but is lower than expected | A loss resets the current streak | Look at the Statistics screen: it shows the current and the maximum streak |
The first four rows follow from what we tested: clearing the site's data and opening a fresh browser profile both produced an empty Statistics screen. The last three rows come from how streaks generally work, and we could not test, for example, app-versus-website behavior, so treat those as things to check, not facts.
Step-by-step checks
On a computer
- Open Wordle in the browser you used to play before. Click the Statistics icon.
- If the numbers are empty, try the other browsers installed on the computer and any other profile you used.
- Open your browser's settings and find the site data or cookie settings. Check whether the browser is set to clear data when you close it. If it is, Wordle will lose a signed-out streak every time.
- Check any cleaning or privacy tool you use. Some remove site data automatically.
On a phone or tablet
- Open Wordle in the same browser or app you used before (the Safari, Chrome or NYT Games app).
- Check whether the browser's private mode is on.
- Look in your phone's browser settings for options that clear history or site data automatically, and for storage cleaner apps.
- If you changed phones, remember that signed-out stats do not transfer.
Menu names differ between devices and versions, so we describe the setting, not the exact path. If you cannot find it, search your browser's help for "clear site data".
What may be recoverable, and what is not
Be careful here, because the answer depends on whether you were logged in.
- If you were logged in to an NYT account when you played, your stats may be available when you log in again. We did not test this, so confirm it in your own account.
- If you were signed out and your browser data is gone, we found no way to bring it back from the game itself. The record was stored in the browser. If you have a browser backup or a system restore that includes the browser profile, that is outside what we can test or promise.
- Do not assume a screenshot restores anything. A screenshot proves your streak to a friend. It does not change the game's records.
If your case is neither, contact NYT Games support through the Help link of the NYT Games site or app. We could not open the NYT help pages with our tools, so read them directly and follow what they say, not what a third-party website promises.
Warnings before you "fix" anything
- Do not clear browser data to try to fix a missing streak. That is the action that removes it. If your stats still show in any browser, leave that browser alone.
- Do not reinstall the app or reset the browser before you have checked the other browsers and devices.
- Be skeptical of tools that claim to restore Wordle streaks. The record is in your browser or in your account, and a website cannot read it for you.
How to protect your streak from now on
- Log in to an NYT account (free) on every device you play on, so your stats are linked to the account rather than to one browser.
- Stop automatic clearing of site data for the Wordle site in your browser's settings.
- Do not use private mode for your daily puzzle.
- Note your stats now and then. Write down the current and maximum streaks from the Statistics screen once a month.
- Play on one main device if you do not want to log in.
The short version
For a signed-out player, a Wordle streak is a record in one browser on one device. Clear it, switch browsers or switch devices and it is gone. Logging in to an NYT account is the one step the game itself suggests to link your stats. For missing streaks tied to an account, ask NYT Games support.
