We Compared 20 Embeddable Games for Small Websites

We loaded 20 of the games in PlayKovo's embed catalog in a real browser, pressed play on each, and measured what happened. The headline: all 20 opened, 19 are declared for phones, the game files ranged from nothing measurable to 6.7 MB, and the first open of any of them cost about the same 1.6 MB, because the embed page itself carries most of the weight. Here is the detail, the method and the limits.
What this test is and is not
It is an automated load test: each game was opened from its embed address in Chrome 155, a play control was pressed and we recorded bytes, requests, whether a canvas appeared and any console errors. We repeated it with a phone profile (Pixel 7) for the 19 games declared for mobile, and a second time with a warm cache to measure repeat visits.
It is not a play test. We did not play any game through, we did not judge fun, difficulty or fairness and we did not test touch controls with fingers on a phone. If a game is in a table below with "Canvas found", that means a drawing surface appeared, not that the game is good.
The 20 games are the starter library from our 20-game starter guide: five puzzle, five casual, four arcade, four action and two sports titles. Measured on 16 October 2026.

How to read the columns:
- Game files is what was downloaded after pressing play, from an empty cache.
- Repeat visit is the total transferred on a second visit with a warm cache. Values near 35 KB mean the browser reused nearly everything.
- Canvas found is a yes or no on whether our check found a canvas element after pressing play.
- Console errors counts red messages in the browser console on desktop. It is not a count of visible bugs.
What stands out
1. The first open costs about the same for everyone
For all 20 games, opening the embed from scratch before pressing play moved between 1.4 and 1.7 MB. That cost is mostly shared scripts that every embed page loads, not game content. So the question "which game is heavy" is really "which game's own files are heavy", and that is the Game files column.
2. Game files vary by two orders of magnitude
The median across these 20 was 140 KB. Seventeen of the 20 were under 250 KB. Lumira is the outlier at 6.7 MB (a game with 750 levels and illustrated regions), and Motorcar Volleyball (495 KB) and Stickman Dash (447 KB) are the next heaviest. If you have visitors on slow connections, pick from the low end. Our guide to 15 lightweight games ranks the whole catalog by this measure.
3. Repeat visits are cheap
Most games transferred about 35 KB on a second visit. Some transferred around 230 KB, which suggests that some resources were revalidated or not cached. Either way, a returning player pays a small fraction of the first open.
4. Mobile: no sideways scrolling and few surprises
Of the 19 games declared for mobile, none caused horizontal overflow in the phone profile, and 15 showed a canvas after pressing play. The other four (Jewelsback, Minesweeper Kovo, Cream 2048 and Lumira) showed none. Those are puzzle and word games that may be built from page elements instead of a canvas, so "no canvas" is a limit of our check, not proof of failure. It does mean we cannot say from this test that they started correctly.
5. Console errors are common and mostly not visible
Ten of the 20 logged at least one console error on desktop. The most common types across the whole catalog were scripts blocked by a content security policy and failed requests to third-party hosts. One game stands out: Lumira logged ten errors, including blocked connections. We did not look at what a player would see.
Do not take error counts as quality scores. The cleaner games in our table logged none, and the games with an error or two may work perfectly. Use them to decide which games deserve a manual look.
What we would start with
Based only on what we measured, these are the lowest-risk first picks for a small site, because they opened on both desktop and phone profiles, are light and had no console errors:
| Game | Why it is a safe first pick |
|---|---|
| Blade Spin | 33 KB of game files, canvas on both, 0 errors, works in either orientation |
| Orbit Keeper | 57 KB, canvas on both, 0 errors |
| Water Sort Puzzle | 78 KB, canvas on both, 0 errors |
| Arrow Escape: Tap Away Arrows Puzzle | 74 KB, canvas on both, 0 errors |
| Zigzag | 210 KB, canvas on both, 0 errors |
Controls matter as much as load. The controls the feed lists for these are simple: tap anywhere, tap a tube, tap an arrow. That fits small screens. But we did not test them with fingers, so try each on a phone.
What we would test by hand before publishing
- Games with no canvas found. Jewelsback, Minesweeper Kovo, Cream 2048 and Lumira: press play yourself, on a phone, and play a round.
- Games with errors. Sumo.io, Hex Drop.io, Tideline, Rainbow Run, Stolen Sword and Stickman Dash each logged one error on desktop. Check that nothing visible is wrong.
- The only desktop-only game in the set. Motorcar Volleyball is declared desktop only, so test it with a keyboard.
How we measured, in detail
- Browser: Chrome 155 (stable) launched with Playwright, on one Windows machine and one home connection. Three games were measured in parallel, so times are indicative. Bytes are far more reliable.
- Cold run: an empty cache for each game. The warm run repeats the visit in the same browser session.
- Phone profile: Pixel 7 emulation (viewport, touch events, mobile user agent). It is an emulation, not a device.
- "Press play": we clicked the single large control on the embed page, waited until requests went quiet for four seconds and counted the bytes after the click.
- Third-party scripts (ads and analytics) are included in first-open numbers because they load with the page.
- What we did not measure: frame rate, memory, battery use, audio, saved progress, real fingers on glass, or other browsers.
The measurement script is simple enough to adapt, and we use the same approach in our monitoring guide.

Should You Host HTML5 Games Yourself or Use a Game Distributor?
For most websites the answer is a distributor, and bandwidth is not the reason. Here is a neutral comparison of cost, updates, licensing, control and maintenance, with measured game sizes behind the cost arithmetic.

How to Handle Fullscreen Problems in Embedded Browser Games
Fullscreen fails for three reasons: the iframe lacks permission, the browser does not support it for that element, or the request was not a user action. We tested each in Chrome 155 and built a CSS fallback for browsers with no Fullscreen API.

Which HTML5 Game Genres Work Best for Touchscreen Websites?
Genres that ask for one tap, one drag or one swipe suit phones; genres built on joysticks and several buttons suit them less. We classified the declared mobile controls of all 73 mobile-ready games in PlayKovo's feed and show the pattern by genre, with the limits of that method.
